Golf Hybrid and Fairway Woods – A Must Have for your golf set |
Long Irons and Fairway Woods are an iconic duo. They go together like Mac and Cheese. Like some types of duos, they birthed a love-child: the Hybrid Golf Club. It is essentially a mix of the two, and if you’re passionate about them as we are you’ll see them as boasting the Iron’s and Wood’s best features. They are especially revolutionary in replacing the lower iron numbers due to their higher trajectory, which result in fewer rolls. They are also designed with shorter shafts which lead to easier swings.
Although Hybrids aren’t as flexible as Woods, they boast larger sweet spots with a lower center of gravity. Players find them more forgiving for these reasons. Hybrid Clubs are widely utilized by professionals but prove to be fantastic for beginners and casual players. Shots can be controlled better due to the higher trajectory, which is especially useful for landing on the green. Many professionals use Hybrids for chipping. The improved control is also useful when dealing with the rough.
Many players replace Irons, particularly the 1-4 clubs, with a nicely-designed set of Hybrid Clubs. This is what we would recommend for anyone who hasn’t owned one before or enjoys golf as a casual hobby rather than as a profession. It’s important to understand the differences between Hybrid Clubs and the key features to look for. We’ve reviewed the best clubs out there and have comprised a comprehensive Buyers Guide for you.
Let’s talk you through the best 5 Hybrid Clubs that are available to buy in 2019…

Cobra Golf 2019 F9 Men’s Speedback
The Cobra series of Hybrids, much like TaylorMade, also come with a lot of history, perhaps more… Although TaylorMade’s Rescue is credited as being the forefather of Hybrid Golf Clubs, Cobra Golf launched the ‘Baffler’ in 1998, which in essence was the first Hybrid, but not labeled as so. It was designed with inspiration from their Baffler design released in the late 1970s, so the origins of the Hybrid Golf Club can be dated back 25+ years before the Rescue’s creation, with Cobra Golf as the pioneer of this…
The F9 has been designed technologically for improved launch. Designed with a larger head for improved swing alignment, the F9 is a weighty club that offers greater swing control. Golf Hybrids for All Handicaps – Buyer’s Guide Review
We’ve recommended some fantastic clubs, all unique in their way. Perhaps you’ve already found a favorite (we advise that you trust this golfing instinct!), but perhaps you’re undecided and that’s understandable: Hybrid Clubs are relatively new, and although brilliantly-designed, in some cases, can be quite complex to analyze and review. Read our Buyers Guide for… well, guidance… and be sure to review the amazing golf clubs we’ve recommended above.
Let’s talk you through some of the features to look out for when buying a Hybrid Golf Club…
Why Buy a Hybrid Club
Hybrid Clubs are the best-of-the-both-worlds of Long Irons and Fairway Qoods. Hybrids are a balance of Iron and Wood’s best features and make golfers: better golfers. For years, beginners, casual golfers, and professionals have often struggled with irons, particularly the 1-4 numbers. Hybrids were invented to alleviate the 1-4 stress and facilitate better performance and scores, with much less stress!
Controlled hits can be enjoyed from their higher trajectory and prove great for tricky situations in the rough. they are also used for chipping purposes and to achieve more accuracy when aiming for the green…
Differences between a Hybrid Club and a Fairway Wood
Hybrid Clubs are slightly lighter and easier to swing. They are designed with shorter shafts that help achieve this. Woods are more flexible, but Hybrids have larger sweet spots for cleaner and more satisfying hits than you’re able to with Irons. Hybrids have a lower center of gravity which helps improve accuracy and control, which combined with higher trajectory makes a golfer’s medium game, so-to-speak, virtually impeccable. Hybrids also offer more forgiveness. They’re also a great means of bridging the gap between the pre-existing the fairway and iron set-up, creating a more fluid set.
Golf can be a stressful game but it’s one that’s supposed to be fun, so it’s nice to know that a new type of club has helped to facilitate enjoyment. But to achieve this, you might have to let go of any beloved Irons you may have an attachment to….
Differences between a Hybrid Club and a Long Iron
Even more so than a Fairway Wood, Hybrid Clubs were designed to replace Irons. Even golfers who still prefer the feel of an Iron are still likely to replace their 1-4 irons with Hybrids, as a minimum! The key difference between the two and an improvement on Irons is they offer shots with a higher trajectory, which is a flaw of the Iron design that doesn’t do this too well.
Particularly the 1-4 numbers, we can’t stress enough how revolutionary Hybrids have been in combating these difficulties that were faced using the lower numbers. The Hybrid’s higher trajectory leads to better control over specific spot-landings and less roll, making them ideal for tricky shots trying to aim for the green.
Hybrid clubs for Beginners
Hybrids are good, and arguably necessary for beginners The latter claim may seem unfounded because there have been plenty of fantastic professional golfers who at one point before 2003 were beginners, right? At the very least, Hybrid Clubs will help players adapt to the new skills they are learning more effectively and speed up the progression from beginner to pro… or somewhere in-between! Professionals use them for their ease, so if they help the Jim Furyk’s and Tiger Woods’ of the World, then imagine what they do for beginners or simply more casual golfers.
Hybrid Club Lofts
The ideal loft will be determined by what you want out of your club. A 3 Iron, for example, will suit a loft between 20-24°. That said, if you want more control in your shots then reduce this slightly. Use a similar process for your 4 and 5 Woods, and any others you wish to replace.
Hybrid Clubs Alternatives
Hybrids and ‘Utility Clubs’ are often differentiated, but they are more-or-less the same. Bar from a few minor differences in material design, the only alternatives to Hybrid Clubs are Long Irons and Fairway Wood. Although these are, alternatives, many modern golfers would see them as being a downgrade. Hybrids, at the end of the day, were created to replace these types of clubs, continuing the evolution of Golf.
Do Professional Golfers use Hybrid Clubs?
Yes. They use them to facilitate swings, so this has double, triple, even quadruple the effect on beginners and casual golfers. Notable golfers who use Hybrid Clubs are Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Mark Wilson, and Davis Love III.
